Guard Your Hearts

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it. Proverbs 4:23

Today's Scripture
Proverbs 4:20-27

Today's Devotional
On a long trip to South Africa, with a group of more than 250 church members, family and friends, a wise command rang out. Anxious, complaining and impatient tourists filled the bus until a leader yelled out, “Guard your hearts!” The church members knew what she was talking about and quickly became quieter.

Her words weren’t really about getting quiet; they were from Proverbs, where Solomon shared practical wisdom with his son. It was a reminder to protect the things in our hearts and to avoid allowing distractions, disagreements and impatience to get into our souls. “Above all else, guard your heart,” Solomon wrote, “for everything you do flows from it” (4:23).

Proverbs reminds us how to live in peace and joy—to keep our eyes on God and “submit to” Him in all we do (3:6). As we guard our hearts, we watch what we say and what we meditate on. Instruction to “keep corrupt talk” (4:24) from our mouths and “look straight ahead” (v. 25) pulls us back when we’re tempted to complain, gossip or look elsewhere other than to God. What a great reminder to rely on God and make sure the things that enter our hearts are pure—because everything we do flows from the heart (v. 23).

Reflect & Pray
What does it mean for you to guard your heart? How can you stay focused on God’s path for you despite the distractions of life?

Dear God, thank You for the wisdom of the Scriptures. Please help me to guard my heart as I stay focused on You.

Today's Insights
The book of Proverbs features wisdom sayings that are often arranged topically, especially around a primary theme. In Proverbs 4:20-27, paying attention to the wise “words” (v. 20) of parents and other elders introduces the theme of guarding our hearts. The heart determines how we use our words (v. 24), what we fix our eyes on (v. 25), and whether we’re walking confidently on the path of life (v. 26) or stumbling on the path of “evil” (v. 27; see v. 12). The sage reminds us that this requires intentionality, careful thought, and being “steadfast” (v. 26). This advice comes from a trusted source—an elder who recalls needing such counsel as a young person himself (vv. 1-4). In fact, the writer has remembered these words into his own adulthood and has validated them through his personal attention to them. Today, the Spirit helps us remember God’s wisdom, stay focused on Him, and keep our hearts pure (John 14:26; Romans 8:5).
