Timothy’s Spiritual Influences

Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.

Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.

1 Timothy 4:14 NKJV; 2 Timothy 1:6 NKJV

Timothy’s Spiritual Influences
All spiritual gifts come from God, but these unique messages to Timothy tell us that others were also instrumental in the development of his gift. The ancient world told of mystics who might declare one’s destiny or impart special abilities, but we do not interpret these verses in that light. Instead, responsible Christian elders must have had a close relationship with Timothy when he was young. Perhaps they told him, “We see God working in your life! He has something for you to do. Stay true to Him!” And then, as Timothy traveled with Paul, the gift of God developed further in him through the apostle’s close association and example.

As we become mature in faith, we too ought to consider those coming after us. How sad if the only “laying on of hands” that young Christians know is the stern correction of their elders! It is beautiful when older ones develop a genuine relationship with young people, speaking words of “prophecy” that God wants to use them for something great. How helpful, too, are one-on-one training sessions such as Paul had with Timothy!

In addition, Timothy had godly influences from his mother and grandmother (2 Tim. 1:5). Not all believers have a Christian upbringing, but so often it is true that someone was praying for us in our younger years. Further, the Holy Scriptures themselves guided Timothy’s spiritual development (3:15)—and still today they are an essential element of any progress for the Lord in our lives. We are all unique, and God is weaving together various influences in our lives to produce a tapestry of ability and opportunity in our service for Him.

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
