Birds for Sacrifice (4)—Cleansing of the Leper

Then shall the priest command to take for him that is to be cleansed two clean living birds … And the priest shall command that one bird be killed in an earthen vessel over running water: as to the living bird—he shall take it … and dip [it] in the blood of the bird that was killed.
Leviticus 14:4–6 JND

Birds for Sacrifice (4)—Cleansing of the Leper
Another occasion when birds were used in sacrifice was in the cleansing of the leper. Scripture says, “All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Rom. 3:23). We were all spiritual lepers! Only God could heal leprosy, whether the physical lepers in Israel, or the spiritual lepers of today.

At the beginning of the cleansing ceremony for the leper, two birds were to be taken. Notice that these birds were to be clean and living. In Noah’s offering (Gen. 8:20), we see a distinction made between clean and unclean birds. Christ was clean, and we were unclean in our sins. The birds also were to be living, in contrast to the leper who was under a death sentence. And we all were dead in our offenses and sins (Eph. 2:1), dead to God.

One of the birds was to be killed in an earthen vessel. How amazing that the eternal Son of God came into this world, and took a body, an earthen vessel, that was prepared for Him (Heb. 10:5). In His body, He “by the eternal Spirit offered Himself spotless to God” (9:14). The running water in our passage would typify the Holy Spirit.

Then, the second bird was to be dipped in the blood of the first bird and released into the air. The second bird speaks of Christ’s resurrection. He is risen, praise His name! He “has been delivered for our offenses and has been raised for our justification” (Rom. 4:25). This is why the second bird was dipped into the blood. It was the evidence that the leper was cleansed before God. For us the blood of Christ has been shed. We are cleansed and justified forever (5:1, 9)!

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
