Immutable and Immovable

The mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but My loving-kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall My covenant of peace be removed.
Isaiah 54:10 JND

Immutable and Immovable
The mountains appear to be the most stable objects in the material world; nevertheless, wind and water are wearing them down. But more enduring than the mountains of primitive granite is God’s loving-kindness. Other things may change and vanish away sooner or later—the laboriously amassed money, the lovingly nurtured lawn, or the interminably paid-for house may all be taken away in one adverse moment.

But God’s love is immutable and immovable! His “covenant of peace” is not to be “removed.” These are glorious guarantees. Nothing can assail the believer’s safety or undermine his security. God says to us, as it were, “Within My fold you are safe forever.” As another has said, “Our cause is in the very hands of Him who can say with unimpeachable dignity: ‘No one shall seize them out of My hand’ (Jn. 10:28).” We rejoice that our cause is not in our own hands, because it would not be desirable that it would be. Why? Have we not had in our hands things that we lost? But is it not true that what we have placed in God’s hands we still possess?

We rejoice in our faithful, covenant-keeping God. Anchor your soul on the rock of divine veracity. The great adversary may try to impair your confidence, shake your trust, and even question your salvation. But what are these to challenge God’s promises, for just as the mountains surrounded and protected Jerusalem, so the Lord will surround and protect His people “from henceforth and for evermore” (Ps. 125:2).

-- J. R. MacDuff

We change—He changes not, though changing years roll by;
His love, not ours, the resting-place, we on His truth rely.

-- H. Bonar

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
