The Unique and Supreme Sacrifice

But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone.

Behold, I have come … to do Your will, O God … By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

Hebrews 2:9 NKJV; Hebrews 10:7, 10 NKJV

The Unique and Supreme Sacrifice
The Lord Jesus came into this world to be the ultimate sacrifice, foreknown from before the world’s foundation (1 Pet. 1:19–20). When the time had come, He fulfilled God’s will as the only One able to do so. The Scriptures reveal these matters that are beyond our understanding but rejoice our hearts. The Holy Spirit helps us to grasp and enjoy them, since they relate to our Beloved. Who can fathom the greatness of such love? The eternal Triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—was of one mind about the need of a sacrifice. Who understands the greatness of that one sacrifice, with blessed results for God, for Jesus, and for us?

“We see Jesus” (2:9) is the major theme of Hebrews with much about Christ’s sacrifice and its results. The expression “at the right hand of God” (or “His right hand”) occurs four times in Hebrews (1:3; 8:1; 10:12; 12:2) and three more times in Paul’s writings (Rom. 8:34; Eph. 1:20; Col. 3:1). Saul of Tarsus saw the Lord Jesus at God’s right hand, when He called him on the road to Damascus (Acts 9, 22, 26). Peter refers to God’s right hand, a place of honor and favor, where Jesus is now seated (1 Pet. 3:22). John shows us how we may have fellowship with the Father and the Son, based on Christ’s amazing sacrifice (1 Jn. 1).

-- Alfred E. Bouter

As in His life, so in His death,

He was devoted still;
For us in love resigned His breath,

Obedient to Thy will.
