Joshua (8)—Privileged to Have God’s Word

There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded which Joshua did not read before all the assembly of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers who were living among them.
Joshua 8:35

Joshua (8)—Privileged to Have God’s Word
God gave Israel a complete victory over Ai, but it was not the easy victory that they in self-confidence had originally expected to gain with just three thousand warriors.

Once the victory was won, Joshua and the people did what Moses had commanded in Deuteronomy 27. Joshua built an altar of large whole stones on which he offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings. Plastering the stones, he wrote a copy of the law on them. Then he gathered all Israel together plus the strangers living among them. Six tribes stood on Mount Gerizim to bless the people and the other six tribes on Mount Ebal to curse. All that Moses had commanded be read was solemnly read to them.

How attentively they must have listened as the blessings and the curses were read to them! We must remember that this took place before people enjoyed the privilege of having personal printed copies of God’s Word of their own, not to mention computers or other electronic devices. Rarely did they have an opportunity to hear God’s Word read. Notice too who was present at the meeting: Joshua, all Israel, the elders, officers, judges, priests, Levites, women, children, and the strangers living among them.

How privileged we are! God’s Word is readily available to us. We can read it without fear of being molested. Again and again we see that God wants everyone … our children included … present when His Word is considered. May all our families be so blessed!

Eugene P. Vedder, Jr.

May the Word of God dwell richly

In my heart from hour to hour,
So that all may see I triumph

Only through His power.

UNCOVERING EVIL

The presence of the supernatural power of God in a church can take that church beyond limits.
It can also uproot the presence of evil in the midst of Gods children. In Acts 5, a couple were uprooted through this. If we are going to sanitise the church, we need the Holy Spirit. Just as we need Him to heal, save...More

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
(Titus 1:2-3)

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More
