Two Are Better Than One

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–10

Two Are Better Than One
We often consider these “two” in connection with a marriage relationship. This is certainly a fitting application, yet we can apply it even more generally. Paul often had a fellow laborer with him, such as Silas, Timothy, Luke, or Barnabas. We read of two sisters, Tryphena and Tryphosa, who labored for the Lord (Rom. 16:12). Aquila and Priscilla served the Lord as a godly couple.

Why are two better than one? The first reason we read of is they will “have a good reward for their labor.” What a privilege to join together in service for the Lord—there is a unique reward in it.

The second reason given is that they can be companions and lift each other up when the other falls. The labor is not always easy, and there will be moments when we feel we are going through a valley. Our strength ultimately comes from the Lord Jesus Christ, and by grace He can use another believer to encourage, uplift, and support us through the challenges we face.

This idea of two being better is not about two who happen to be walking in close proximity; the blessing comes to those who have a joint devotion to the Lord in love, those who do it for Him. The “two” in verse 9 becomes “three” in verse 12, symbolizing that any labor or true companionship needs to be rooted in a personal relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. As we submit to His guidance, rely on His strength, and strive to bring Him glory, He will reward the labor and enable us to encourage others. May we depend on Him and seek relationships that form “a threefold cord” to honor Him.

OFFENDED IN CHRIST?

The Christian race must be run with lots of patience or else it will be bungled midway. If you are inpatient with Gods timing, you will not only get into trouble but may not be able to finish the race. A good number of backsliders derailed from their heavenly track because of impatience. In Matthew 11:6 Jesus...More

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.

The spiritual elevation of Abraham in Genesis 18 and 19 is something very peculiar. He seems...More

THE HOLY SPIRIT

It is one thing to receive the anointing and another to keep growing on it. There are people who had the anointing, but today, everything has virtually ebbed out. It is possible to connect with the Holy Spirit and to continue to flow in the power of the anointing even at increasing levels. If this is your desire,...More

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More
