A Careful Examination

There are three things which are too wonderful for me, yes, four which I do not understand.

Thus says the LORD: “For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away its punishment, because they sell the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of sandals.”

These six things the LORD hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him.

When the Assyrian comes into our land, and when he treads in our palaces, then we will raise against him seven shepherds and eight princely men.

Proverbs 30:18 ; Amos 2:6 ; Proverbs 6:16 ; Micah 5:5

A Careful Examination
These verses employ a particular figure of speech, expressing numbers in a poetic way to indicate that full consideration has been given to the subject at hand. There are three very wonderful things—in fact, there are four! Israel has transgressed three times—in fact, four times! There are six things the Lord hates—in fact, there are seven! When the enemy comes, seven mighty shepherds will resist him—in fact, eight leaders will join them. These figurative phrases are not saying that Israel had only committed four sins or that only eight warriors will arise. The point is that, after careful examination, a response of absolute clarity and strength is coming next.

All these passages are worthy of study in their own contexts. But, as a category, this type of literary expression illustrates another proverbial saying: “It is the glory of God to conceal a matter, but the glory of kings is to search out a matter” (Prov. 25:2). Certain divine subjects are indeed hidden beyond our view; yet often we are lazy learners when we should be passionate students. Have we given full consideration to the subjects of the Bible? Can we make statements about them with clarity and strength? Since the Scriptures are God’s divine messages, let us eagerly search out the threes and the fours, the sevens and the eights—yes, all the glorious matters of the Word of God.

UNCOVERING EVIL

The presence of the supernatural power of God in a church can take that church beyond limits.
It can also uproot the presence of evil in the midst of Gods children. In Acts 5, a couple were uprooted through this. If we are going to sanitise the church, we need the Holy Spirit. Just as we need Him to heal, save...More

And the angel of the LORD appeared unto the woman, and said unto her, Behold now, thou art barren, and bearest not: but thou shalt conceive, and bear a son. Now therefore beware, I pray thee, and drink not wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing: For, lo, thou shalt conceive, and bear a son; ...More

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)

In the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages of time, but has manifested in its own due season His word.
(Titus 1:2-3)

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More
