Samson (1)—His Birth

The Angel of the LORD appeared to the woman and said to her … “You shall conceive and bear a son. Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean … and no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.”
Judges 13:3–5

Samson (1)—His Birth
God chooses His servants before they are born. He gives directions for the most intimate details of how He wants them to live for His glory and their own good. How their parents live is also of prime importance. We see this clearly as we consider the story of Samson. Manoah and his wife were childless, for his wife was barren. One day the Angel of the Lord appeared to the wife with the message that she would bear a son who was to be a Nazirite to God even before birth. He would begin to deliver Israel out of the hands of the Philistines, their enemies. Manoah’s wife was given vital instructions as to what she was not to eat or drink and what would be important for her son to observe.

The lives we lead as parents and the example we set have a vast influence on our children. It is essential that parents work together in resolute harmony to bring up their children.

Manoah prayed that the Man of God might come again and teach them how to bring up the child they would receive. How important it is for parents to pray to God for directions how to rear their children. The directions they had been given were simply repeated. God has clearly shown us in His Word how to bring up our children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. His instructions are fully adequate. May we thank God for them and pay careful heed to follow them!

Eugene P. Vedder, Jr.

O give us homes built firm upon the Savior,
Where Christ is Head, and Counselor and Guide;
Where ev’ry child is taught His love and favor
And gives his heart to Christ, the crucified.

The Psalmist prayed, Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my anxieties; and see if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting' (Psalms 139:23-24 NKJV). If you're wise you'll...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Look For Teaching Moments

What do these stones mean?' Joshua 4:21 NIV

One of the most effective ways to teach is through teaching moments'. Jesus did that. When a fig tree didn't produce fruit, He cursed it and it immediately withered up. That got the disciples' attention (see Matthew 21:18-22). Then He explained that unless...More
