Gideon (7)—Working Together in Unity

The men of Ephraim said to him, “Why have you done this to us by not calling us when you went to fight with the Midianites?” And they reprimanded him sharply. So he said to them, “What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?” … Their anger toward him subsided when he said that.
Judges 8:1–3

Gideon (7)—Working Together in Unity
The Lord had given Gideon and his three hundred men a glorious victory over the host of 135,000 Midianites. “The sword of the LORD and of Gideon!” had been their battle cry. They had blown their trumpets, broken their pitchers, and let their torches shine. They had not had to fight, for the Lord had caused the fear-stricken Midianites to kill each other and to flee in confusion.

Other Israelite tribes had then joined in pursuit. Gideon had called upon the tribe of Ephraim to take the fords of the Jordan to prevent the enemies from crossing over. They had killed the princes of Midian and had brought their heads to Gideon. But now these proud Ephraimites berated Gideon for not having called them sooner. Gideon answered wisely and humbly, giving them full credit for what they had done, and downplaying his own exploits. He was pursuing the enemy and would not waste time in argument.

How often we do the opposite, snatching defeat out of the very jaws of victory by quarreling with our fellow believers! Rather than winning souls to the Savior we criticize the methods others use to do so. Rather than battling the enemy’s hosts together, we fight against our brethren. Like the disciples in Mark 9:38, we want to forbid others to do what we fail to do “because they do not follow us.” We should rather pursue the enemy than waste time making enemies of our brethren.

Eugene P. Vedder, Jr.

We praise Thee for those ties divine
That bind Thy saints to Thee,
As members of Thy body one—
The Spirit’s unity.

GOD PROMOTES

When God set out to deliver the children of Israel from Egypt, it was to take them out of captivity and bondage and to lift them up. God has come to take you out of your current location in the miry clay to your promised land - a land flowing with milk and honey. This simply tells us that the God of Abraham, Isaac...More

TRAIN UP YOUR CHILD 1

One major undoing of modern civilized society is an abounding generation of untrained children. This trend did not just start, but has been on for some time now. The result is that many untrained children of few years back have become parents themselves. It is the multiplier effect of their lack of proper home...More

A LIBERAL HEART?

Read:
, God asked the widow to feed the prophet before taking care of herself. At the end of the day, what was not enough became more than enough. To what extent do you practice giving as an individual, family, church or nation?

Those who never give will continue to beg, if you desire to...More

Hebrews 11:24-28

Author Zora Neale Hurston wrote a book titled Moses, Man of the Mountain. Published in 1939, it retells the story of Moses and the Exodus. Hurston altered details of the story for her own purposes, weaving in allusions to African American history, folklore, and song. She reflected...More
