Serving the Lord in Obscurity
The names of many individuals are recorded for us in Romans 16, including some with assemblies meeting in their homes. All are regarded favorably, for the chapter provides a lovely picture of the judgment seat of Christ, which will take place immediately after the Rapture brings us into the blessed presence of the Lord.

This chapter begins with the words, “I commend to you Phoebe our sister, who is a servant of the church in Cenchrea” (Rom. 16:1). Note that a sister is mentioned first. Her character and works were commendable. Then also, Priscilla is named before her husband, Aquila. Whenever this couple is seen in the outwardly responsible place, Aquila is named first. How often it is that “the first shall be last and the last first.” Similarly, more obscure saints, whose love for the Lord has been real and fruitful, will often have a more full reward than those of great public ability. Both Priscilla and Aquila risked their necks for Paul’s sake. Aquila no doubt received strength and encouragement from his devoted wife. Mary is noted as laboring much (v. 6). Tryphena and Tryphosa were likely sisters in the flesh who labored together in the Lord. The beloved Persis “labored much in the Lord” (v. 12). All of this is a wonderful encouragement to those who are content to simply seek to please the Lord in obscurity, without recognition from others.

“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord” (1 Cor. 15:58). “And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ” (Col. 3:23–24).
