Not the Guest but the Host

It came to pass, as He sat at the table with them, that He took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them.
Luke 24:30

Not the Guest but the Host
The two disciples on the road to Emmaus compelled the Lord Jesus to stay with them. He sat at the table with them; this expression has the thought of fellowship, and Luke uses the Greek term for this expression several times throughout his Gospel (cf. Lk. 7:36, 9:14–15, 14:8). Each time it is used, it means to recline at a meal, which was the custom of the day.

Here the Lord Jesus was willing to fellowship with them around their table. But something interesting took place. When Christ is the center of our fellowship, He becomes the object of that fellowship. In the early church, they continued steadfastly in the apostle’s doctrine, in fellowship, in the breaking of bread and in prayers. The fellowship flowed out of the teaching and here we see the same thing.

Another thing we notice is that the guest becomes the host. Often, when our Lord is invited into a home He takes over! This is the way it ought to be! I once saw a picture hanging in a home which read, “The Lord is the unseen guest at every meal.” But the truth is He does not want to be the unseen guest; He desires to be the host of our homes!

We must remember that God does not want to simply be a part of our lives, but that we fully surrender to the lordship of Christ, to His authority in our lives, and it will affect our hearts as it did for these two on the road to Emmaus.

Tim Hadley, Sr.

Now around Thee, Lord, we meet,
Sitting lowly at Thy feet;
Sacred fellowship, how sweet!
Savior, we adore Thee.

Jehovah appeared to him by the oaks of Mamre. And he sat at the tent-door in the heat of the day. And he lifted up his eyes and saw, and behold, three men standing near him.

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

REWARD FOR LABOUR

Jacob sojourned with Laban and laboured for him for several years. At first, his host was cheating him at every opportunity, and the years of his hard labour were almost in vain. Down the line, God had to intervene to enable Jacob eat the fruit of his labour. For a reader of this devotional, in every area that you...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Bible in one year:
