A Morning Prayer

Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation. Give heed to the voice of my cry, my King and my God, for to You I will pray. My voice You shall hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning I will direct it to You, and I will look up.
Psalm 5:1-3

A Morning Prayer
Prayer for the believer is a necessity like oxygen, and something that comes as natural as breathing. Yet we often struggle with consistency; as far as having any regular pattern, prayer is more "hit and miss." In Psalm 5:1-3, we see a guide or pattern which is very simple: "in the morning."

The Lord Jesus Christ, who is not only our Savior but also our model (1 Pet. 2:21; 1 Jn. 2:6), set a pattern for us as to timing and regularity: "Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed" (Mk. 1:35). It was early, the first part of the day. I think it goes without saying that we should give God the first place in the day. It was in a "solitary place"; family and public prayer is important, but we all need that private prayer, without distraction. This means we probably shouldn't open up our electronic devices until afterwards, and it would be good to have a private location if possible. We also see regularity in the life of Christ: "He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed" (Lk. 22:39). He was so accustomed to pray there that Judas knew where to find Him.

"You shall hear my voice in the morning" is a lovely thought. To think that God would desire to hear our voice in the first place. Prayer does not have to be long or complicated, but simply breathing out or even groaning before our Father. We are not trying to put anyone under legal bondage, as circumstances may vary from person to person; we would only encourage you to regularly "look up."

Many years ago, at the first time I was leaving Nigeria for overseas, I was on my way to Canada to attend a world conference of Applied...More
