Dominion Over the Fish of the Sea

And God blessed them; and God said to them have dominion over the fish of the sea.
Genesis 1:28

Dominion Over the Fish of the Sea
It is very interesting that in the creation of mankind in Genesis 1, the first part of the creation they are said to have dominion over is the fish of the sea. The fall of Adam and Eve into sin in Genesis 3 altered this. In fact, rather than Jonah having dominion over the great fish, the great fish had dominion over him, as it swallowed him !

Yet Psalm 8 tells us that it was still God's thought for there to be a Man who would have the rule over the works of His hands, including the fish of the sea (vv. 6-8).

In the Gospel records, we are told of the dominion which the Lord Jesus exercised over the fish of the sea.

In Luke 5, after using Peter's boat to preach from, the Lord told him to let down his nets for a haul of fish. Peter replies that they had been out all night and had taken nothing. He confesses that they did not have dominion over the fish of the sea! However, upon letting down one net at the Lord's direction, it became so full of fish that the net began to break and caused both ships to almost sink. Peter and his fellow fishermen did not have dominion over the fish of the sea, but the Lord Jesus did!

In John 21, we have a similar, but different, account. The disciples had fished all night and caught nothing. The risen Lord appears on the shore and tells them to cast the net on the right side of the boat. They obey and again pull up a load of fish! Again, we see that they were not in control of the fish, but their, and our, Master was! (See also Mt. 17:27.)

Are there areas of your life that seem as if they are out of your control? Be assured that the fish of the sea, as well as everything else, are under His control!

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

...when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem...
Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
