God’s Power Over Things Both Great and Small

O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You? Are You not our God?

And the Lord God prepared a plant and made it come up over Jonah.

2 Chronicles 20:6-7; Jonah 4:6

God's Power Over Things Both Great and Small
What an encouragement for our hearts as we read various portions of Scripture. In Daniel, we understand God's dealings with Nebuchadnezzar, his kingdom, and several other kingdoms which follow (see Dan. 2; 7; 8). All that was spoken by him has been accomplished except the setting up of the kingdom of the Lord, the King of Kings, as a stone destroying all the powers until it fills the whole earth (2:34-35). We wait for the Lord to have this position of honor and glory. How marvelous it is that God stoops down to earth and sets up major kingdoms and then removes them at His will and for His purpose.

We also read of many other dealings of God with man, not only in world-shaking ways but also on a very personal level. Jonah disobediently tried to escape from God; he went down to the bottom of the ship, but God saw him there and sent a great tempest on that ship; then God sent a whale which swallowed Jonah. Following this Jonah reluctantly preached the word of warning to Nineveh and waited outside the city to see the results. God made a gourd plant to grow to provide shade for the suffering prophet, but then later sent a worm to destroy the plant. How amazing to see God working, dealing with one individual in a very personal way.

What a wonderful God is ours, He who moves mountains, and worms, for His glory and honor and purpose. He is intimately aware, concerned, and working on your and my behalf. May we trust Him!

Not I but Christ

Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.

Not I but Christ
I have heard it said, "People should be allowed to be themselves." But I can find no scriptural basis to support this statement, for freedom "to be myself" is to...More
