Faith and Victory

For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
1 John 5:4-5

Faith and Victory
These verses show that everyone who is born of God loves all those who are born of God, since they all belong to the same family. To love God and obey His commandments is how it should be, since love and light are inseparable, and God's perspective should be ours. The second feature of those born of God is that they overcome the world. A helpful illustration is Israel in Egypt when they were oppressed and yet kept growing (Ex. 1).

What God did in the physical realm, then, is a picture of what He does now in the spiritual realm. The fact that we are born of God guarantees victory, but this can never be separated from our faith, which is a gift of God! Our faith overcomes the influences of this world, just as the Israelites' faith was stronger than Pharaoh's oppression. Our faith is not faith in oneself or in what we can do. No, our faith centers on Jesus, the Son of God. Only because of putting our trust in Him can we overcome the control and pressures of the enemy and his world.

Soon after he had met Jesus on the Damascus road, Saul of Tarsus confessed Him as the Son of God and testified that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. Saul had been born into a Jewish family, but now he was also born of God into His family. This is how Saul overcame the world, in its religious, political, and social aspects (Phil. 3:7-14). It was because of his faith in Jesus as the Son of God, just as John wrote in 1 John 5:1-5. The love of God is inseparable from both keeping His commandments and believing that Jesus is the Son of God.
