King Uzziah (1)—Spiritual Prosperity

[Uzziah] sought God in the days of Zechariah, who had understanding in the visions of God; and as long as He sought the Lord, God made him prosper.
2 Chronicles 26:5

King Uzziah (1)—Spiritual Prosperity
King Uzziah of Judah started out in a very promising way. He was only sixteen when he became king. Spiritual mentors are very important in our lives, and it appears that Uzziah had just such a person in Zechariah. This is not the same Zechariah of the Minor Prophets, the only thing we know about him was that he "had understanding in the visions of God." Obviously, this man had a big influence on young Uzziah, for he "sought God in the days of Zechariah." He mentored Uzziah and had a good influence on the early life of the young king. May there be more mentors like Zechariah in our lives and for our young people!

There is, however, an important cautionary note in our text today, a foreshadowing of what would come in the life of Uzziah: "as long as he sought the Lord, God made him prosper." As wonderful as a godly mentor and spiritual role model may be, and as much encouragement as we may receive from others, we still need to be exercised with regard to our own daily walk with God. Of course prospering in the Christian context is referring to "soul" prosperity (3 Jn. 2), not the false gospel of financial prosperity. We need to keep short accounts with God, have a daily walk in communion with Him. This will not spare us from the trials of life, but it will strengthen us for them.

We do not know how old Uzziah was when Zechariah died, we only know he "sought God in the days of Zechariah." We have been blessed by a godly older generation, many of whom are now going home to be with the Lord. Are we prepared to continue in the things we have learned? A searching and solemn question for each of us.

What shall the baptized for the dead do if ...

What shall the baptized for the dead do if those that are baptized rise not at all? Why also are they baptized for them?
(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More

Getting Them From Childhood To Adulthood (2)

Be clear minded and self-controlled' 1 Peter 4:7 NIV
Going from childhood to adulthood is a transition that requires a lot of wisdom and love. Your teen will feel and behave child-like sometimes, and adult-like other times. Your job is to realize that whatever their status, they will become a man (woman)...More
