In the Spirit on the Lord's Day (3)
To the aged apostle John "in the Spirit on the Lord's Day," in exile on the island of Patmos, the Lord Himself appeared, but in a manner John had never seen Him before. Seeing this awesome One in the midst of seven golden lampstands, John fell at His feet as dead, but the Lord stooped down and laid His right hand, the hand of His favor, on him. John's service for Him was not yet finished. His Lord still had a most valuable task for him to do.

The Lord now commissioned John to write The Revelation of Jesus Christ, the prophetic book that completes the Holy Scriptures, tying together loose ends, as it were, that go all the way back to Genesis. God's Word would not be complete without this book that shows us the final victory of the One who came in lowliness and, in seeming defeat, was rejected and crucified at Calvary.

Chapter 1 introduces the book, telling what John saw that Lord's Day. Chapters 2 and 3, while real letters to seven then-existing churches from the One who walks among the golden lampstands, give us a prophetic history of the Church on earth, for both Ezekiel 9:5 and 1 Peter 4:17 tell us that judgment must begin at the house of God. From chapter 4 onward, we are introduced to "the things which will take place after this": awful judgments upon the world during the Tribulation after the Church has been taken to heaven, continuing all the way to the eternal state.

What a task John was given that Lord's Day! How thankful we can be for this book that shows us the ultimate triumph of our Lord Jesus Christ, Victor over sin and Satan. Praise be to His Name!
