The Eye of Faith

And Jesus said to him, "You have both seen Him and it is He who is talking with you."
John 9:37

The Eye of Faith
Our Lord Jesus spoke these wonderful words to the man who had been born blind, whom He had healed. It is evident that the man had never seen the Lord until that time, for he was blind from birth. After having gained sight this was their first meeting. Yet the Lord plainly said, "You have seen Him." What did the Lord mean?

The manner in which the statement is phrased is important. "You have seen Him" declares that, prior to that moment of contact, the healed man enjoyed ongoing sight of the Lord as he used his newly acquired sense of vision. Now, from the narrative the only prior contact he had was in his blindness: the application of the clay mixture and the instruction to go and wash in the pool of Siloam. At no time did he have physical contact with the Lord as a healed man. When and where did he see the Lord?

Throughout the many contacts with the neighbors, the Jews, and the Pharisees, as he gave testimony concerning his miracle, the man not only saw with his natural eyes but also with spiritual eyes. He saw men and he saw their opposition and hatred of the One who had healed him. His apprehension of the Person grew: "a Man called Jesus" (v. 11); "He is a prophet" (v. 17); "the Son of God" (v. 35). He gave increasingly clear testimony to the uniqueness of the Person of the Lord Jesus in the face of hostile opposition, and increasingly so.

How accurately it may be said of this blind man, "Whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory" (1 Pet. 1:8). What an example of the use of the eyes of faith to all who love our Lord Jesus.

(Mark 4:11)

The Lord Jesus told His disciples that they would be given an understanding in "the mystery of the kingdom of God." He also spoke of another class of people to whom everything would be spoken in parables; these He described as, "them who are without." How solemn that God should...More

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
