Christ Our Savior (8)—His First Appearing

Who has saved us, and has called us with a holy calling according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before the ages of time, but has been made manifest now by the appearing of our Savior Jesus Christ, who has annulled death, and brought to light life and incorruptibility by the glad tidings.
2 Timothy 1:9-10

Christ Our Savior (8)—His First Appearing
We have here some blessings that our Lord brought to us at His first coming. The apostle tells us that God's purpose and grace were manifest, became visible, when Christ appeared in this world. He came as our Savior! We have three results of His coming and His work on the cross brought before us.

(1) He annulled death, He broke its power, and, as Hebrews tells us, He annulled him who had the power of death, that is, the devil (Heb. 2:14). In a future day, He will destroy death, the last enemy (1 Cor. 15:26). For the believer even now, the power of death has been annulled. Death belongs to us—it simply brings us into the presence of the Lord (1 Cor. 3:22). Absent from the body, we are present with the Lord (2 Cor. 5:8).

(2) He brought life, eternal life, to light through His coming. All saints have had divine life from the beginning. But by His coming into the world, this life was revealed in its connection with Himself, the Son. We are quickened (made alive) with Christ, raised up together, and seated in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus (Eph. 2:5-6).

(3) He brought to light incorruptibility. We wait for that day when we will be beyond all corruption. Our bodies are marked by corruption; the world around us is marked by corruption. When He comes, He will raise His dead saints, and change His living saints, and then our bodies will be beyond corruption! When He returns in power to this earth, He will free the creation itself from its bondage of corruption (Rom 8:21)! What a Savior!
