Christ Our Savior (10)—The Holy Spirit Given

According to His own mercy He saved us through the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, which He poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior.
Titus 3:5-6

Christ Our Savior (10)—The Holy Spirit Given
The book of Titus shows us how good works are not the cause of our salvation but should be the result of our salvation: "Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us" (Tit. 3:5 nkjv).

Often in Scripture salvation is seen as something done outside of ourselves, for example, "Stand still, and see the salvation of Jehovah" (Ex. 14:13). Here in our verses, we see the complementary work of the Holy Spirit within us. As in John 3 with new birth, we see two agents involved. Washing would imply the water of the Word (Jn. 3:5; Eph. 5:26). This is accompanied by the work of the Holy Spirit in renewal. This washing and renewal is once for all. In addition, the Holy Spirit Himself has also been given to us who believe. He is "poured out on us richly." What a testimony to the work done for us by the Lord Jesus on the cross, enduring the judgment for our sins; and also to the answering work of the Holy Spirit within us in washing and renewing, the Holy Spirit Himself having come to seal and indwell every believer! Truly, we are secure!

In the Old Testament, on the day the priests were consecrated, only Aaron had the oil poured upon him, the oil was sprinkled on his sons (Lev. 8:12, 30). Today, every believer has been sealed with the Holy Spirit who was poured out at Pentecost, not only in small measure, but richly. What a great blessing! What grace!

It is only through our Lord Jesus Christ, the Savior. We see the fullness of the salvation He has won for us. We have not only been saved from hell. Do you rejoice that a divine Person, the Holy Spirit, has come down from heaven to dwell within us?

HOW PERSUADED?

In 2 Timothy 4:10, Demas - a co-labourer with Paul was floored by his love for the world. He became a victim of comfort. Today, many people are also becoming prayerless and shifting their or trust from God to uncertain riches. They are now tending towards the belief that money can fix everything. If you are in such...More

A LESSON FROM GOLIATH

At the first sight of David, Goliath despised him. He was amazed that the children of Israel could find no other man to fight him than a young boy. As if that was not enough, Goliath did not see any conventional weapon of war on David. So he asked, "Am I a dog?" The first lesson we have to learn from this story as...More

Who am Ithat you have brought me this far?' 2 Samuel 7:18 (NIV 2011 Edition)
A MEMBER of parliament took his little daughter to visit Westminster Abbey. As she stood looking up at its magnificent columns, her father asked, What do you think, sweetheart?' With childlike candour she replied, I was...More

Forgive And Move On (2)

Anyone who starts ploughing and keeps looking back isn't worth a thing to God's Kingdom!' Luke 9:62 CEV

If you're wise, you'll do four things:

(1) Focus on the road ahead. By looking in the rear-view mirror instead of what's up ahead, you'll end up in a ditch. Focus on the fact you've...More
