The Rock of Ages
These words celebrate the deliverance of the believing remnant of Israel. The pride of man has been brought down by the outstretched arm of Jehovah. The remnant had no defense against the proud enemies surrounding them. High walls with gates and bars offered no safety. Their deliverance came exclusively from the Lord, Jehovah—the "Rock of Ages" (Isa. 26:4 jnd). The Lord Himself is their defense and stronghold in the day of trouble, as we find also in Nahum 1:7: "The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him." There is no more need of seeking shelter behind secure walls and barred gates, for now the gates are opened wide for the righteous to enter into the strong city, the city of the Great King. The peace that has been longed for through the ages will then be enjoyed.

These words in our verse today are often applied to Christians, but this perfect peace seems to escape us. What then are the conditions required to enjoy perfect peace in the midst of our present-day circumstances? The answer is found right here: The mind must be stayed on the Lord. We all know, however, how our minds tend to wander from one thing to another; therefore, we really cannot depend on our minds. But we can trust in the Lord with absolute confidence. He is the Rock of Ages. Our trust and confidence must be in a Person, but the person to trust in is not myself. It must be Someone outside of myself, our Lord Jesus Christ. He keeps the minds of those whose hearts have found a resting place in Him. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths" (Prov. 3:5-6).
