Identity

We know that we are of the truth.
1 John 3:19

Identity
A friend of mine once had his personal identification card stolen. A few days later it also happened that he lost his job. Although he was willing and able to work, it was nearly impossible to get another job without his ID card. Not only that, but a host of ordinary tasks, such as going to the bank, became difficult as well. It was suddenly obvious to him that proof of identification was essential for daily life to function smoothly.

My friend's ID was replaced, but his experience illustrated some spiritual identity questions. First, does God know who we are? He is the all-knowing God, so we cannot accuse Him of forgetfulness. But the Scriptures also say we cannot assume a personal level of identification with Him before we establish a relationship on His terms. The Lord Jesus spoke of many who had His name on their lips but no knowledge of Him in their hearts. To them He will say, "I never knew you; depart from Me" (Mt. 7:23). Even if we are unknown by others, let us be sure we are well known to Him.

We should ponder, too, whether our friends know who we are. In a time when a Christian's life is the only Bible many will read, what does our identity as believers mean to them? Are we secret disciples? Even Nicodemus, who came to Jesus by night, eventually took up His cause in the day. Like Paul, may we speak boldly, as we ought to speak (Eph. 6:20).

Perhaps most importantly, do we ourselves know who we are? If we have come in repentance to Jesus the Savior, consider this: We are chosen in Him; we are God's masterpiece; we are saints of God and members of one another; we are born from above, blessed and redeemed, loved and forgiven, justified, saved, and accepted. Christians who lack awareness of their identity will be aimless; but when believers are gripped by their identity in Christ, every day is a day of hope and promise.
