Spiritual Encouragement From David (1)

He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved.
Psalm 62:6 NKJV

Spiritual Encouragement From David (1)
David's thoughts of God are vivid in their description. There was nothing more firm or dependable to David than his God. God is not one of many rocks, or on his top five list of defenses. David could say, "He only is my rock," and "He is my defense." Too often we rely on God, but only for some things; we turn to God in certain situations, but not in all of them. One cannot accurately and faithfully state, "I shall not be moved" if there is even an ounce of our trust that is in something or someone other than God. The only truly dependable One is God.

David was not the only one to confide in God when he had questions. John the Baptist was given a distinct honor to prepare the way of the Lord, and did so with zeal and faithfulness, yet when imprisoned, even he needed to quell some doubts by sending disciples to the Lord Jesus to ask him some questions (Mt. 11:3). Having addressed John's inquiries, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?" (Mt. 11:7).

This servant of God had a reputation for being unwavering and standing firm, but thankfully his confidence was not in himself, but in the God he served; so when questions arose, He also did not look inward but turned to the Son of God for answers.

To be sure, God does not become more trustworthy as time goes by—He remains the same—but our confidence in Him grows as we learn more of who He is, and of His gracious ways.

"I have set the Lord always before me; because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved" (Ps. 16:8).

O Jesus, Friend unfailing, how dear art Thou to me!
Are cares or fears assailing? I find my strength in Thee!
