Just retribution

Shall not the judge of all the earth do right?

Christ Jesus, whom God set forth to demonstrate at the present time his righteousness, that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

Genesis 18:25; Romans 3:24-26.

Just retribution
"I hope that good will be rewarded, and evil punished," a philosopher once told a journalist who interviewed him on the afterlife. Countless persons think likewise, for the world is full of injustice. They would like justice to be done after death at least!

Justice will be done. The Bible tells us: "The LORD is the God of recompense. He will surely repay" (Jeremiah 51:56). On the appointed day all will be shown up in light and everyone will receive what he deserves. "God will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether good or evil" (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Our life, our deeds, our intentions, all will be brought as evidence. How can we avoid condemnation by a God who will not hold the guilty innocent and who has declared: "There is none righteous, no, not one" (Romans 3:11)?

Will God exercise His righteous judgment on all? No. "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). All who believe that Jesus, the Son of God, was condemned in their stead will not be judged: they are declared righteous before God. Not believing in Jesus Christ means rejecting God's grace and the blessings of Christ's sacrifice. It means having to appear before God to be judged according to one's works and then to experience eternal torment (Matthew 25:46).

Make the right choice today! "There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus" (Romans 8:1).

Today's reading: Exodus 13:11-22 · Luke 6:12-19
