It won’t leave me in peace

God now commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has appointed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by the man whom he has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising him from the dead.
Acts 17:30.31.

It won't leave me in peace
Our professor of philosophy never missed an opportunity to attack the Bible. One day I asked him after the lecture: "Don't you think you attach too much importance to the Bible? Why don't you leave it alone?" His reply was: "You are right, but perhaps it is because it won't leave me in peace."

The Bible contains the story of a king who had ordered that the words that God had dictated to His prophet Jeremiah should be read to him (cf. Jeremiah ch. 36). They were solemn warnings from God that made him feel very uneasy. If the king wished to avoid the judgments announced, he had to change his way of life and repent - and he didn't want to. So, without waiting for the reading to finish, he threw the scroll into the fire.

That is not the way to find peace. Jeremiah re-wrote all the words of God on another scroll. As to the judgments announced by the prophet, they were well and truly accomplished.

The Bible is indeed the Word of God, a God who loves us. He therefore warns us and invites us to change our attitude towards Him and our way of life. Maybe His warnings do not leave us in peace; they conflict with our evil tendencies. Isn't the Bible true, however? Its voice, speaking inside us, pricks our conscience. Don't close your ears to God's appeals: He wishes to save you. Seek reconciliation with Him, don't stifle that voice!

Today's reading: Exodus 15:17-27 · Luke 7:1-10
