The One who was separate

Such a high priest was fitting for us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become higher than the heavens.
Hebrews 7:26.

The One who was separate
In today's verse various characteristics of the Lord Jesus Christ are enumerated, marking Him out as our High Priest. Today we should like to meditate on one particular point: He is "separate from sinners". That applies to Him at the present time, because He is enthroned in heaven. But He displayed this characteristic already, when He lived here among sinful men.

The Son of God came to earth as a pure and holy human being. He was totally separate from sin. He did no sin, and sin was and is not in Him. Yet He lived in a world full of violence and evil. He was surrounded by sinners. Nevertheless, the evil activity of these persons never had a negative influence on Him. In the midst of a wicked world He remained pure, holy and spotless. Although He went after the lost in His desire to save them, He condemned their trespasses and their rebellion against God.

One Bible commentator gives this explanation: "His grace brought Him close to us in our need. But His holiness kept Him separate from all our sins. He was the heavenly stranger on earth, the One separate from sinners".

The Lord Jesus suffered profoundly when He saw sin and its terrible consequences everywhere. Deep in His heart He sensed that His fellowmen were godless. In His holy soul He abhorred all the evil that surrounded Him.

Today's reading: Exodus 26:31-27:8 · Luke 10:30-42
