The horror of death

Our Saviour Jesus Christ has abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
2 Timothy 1:10.

The horror of death
People fear death because it brings to an end their life on earth and transports them into the afterlife. There all who die unreconciled with God can only expect punishment for their sins. They will be resurrected for judgment and sentenced to eternal condemnation. Although many people doubt and even deny this future punishment, the fear of death still remains.

To provide a way of escape the Son of God came to earth as a Man some 2,000 years ago. The fact that death is the wages of sin (cf. Romans 6:23) did not apply to Him, as He never sinned; He was the only Person not to do so. He sacrificed His life voluntarily and returned to life three days later through resurrection in divine power. In this way He conquered death.

Now the Redeemer grants all who believe on Him a share in His victory. For these He has abolished death. This means making death powerless or ineffective. But death has not yet been done away with. For believers it has lost its terror. They have eternal life. When they die, they go home to be with Jesus. At the rapture of the redeemed those who have passed away will be resurrected, and those who are alive will be changed. They will receive an incorruptible body that death cannot touch (cf. Philippians 3:21). What a victory that is for God's grace!

Today's reading: Exodus 30:17-38 · Luke 12:49-59

BEFORE YOU GET ANGRY

Yesterday we learnt it is not right for us to get angry with God or to take offence against Him, even if we experience the deferment of our hopes. The example of John the Baptist who earlier acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah, but later doubted Him because of his painful experience of incarceration is a warning...More

Luke 2:45

We might as well face it, strife has even infiltrated our church life. It is true enough that the Church is now the Church militant. But, as such, its warfare ought to be that of dedication to revealed truth and divine...More
