Judging the weather or the time

He (Jesus) said to the multitudes, Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, A shower is coming; and so it is. And when you see the south wind blow, you say, There will be hot weather; and there is.
Luke 12:54.55.

Judging the weather or the time
How often is the weather the subject of our conversation! With this subject we can remain non-committal and neutral, when we speak to someone we do not know. However much we may complain and moan about the weather, we cannot alter it in any way.

When Jesus Christ was on earth, He also took the weather as an opportunity to tell His listeners something serious. In His day there was no weather forecast; so people observed the sky to be able to make certain predictions. But notice the conclusion the Lord makes after the statement above: "Hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth, but how is it that you do not discern this time?" (v. 56).

Most people had not grasped the special character of the age in which they were living. The Messiah, their Saviour, had graciously come to them to bring them salvation. A time of blessing, more glorious than the most wonderful summer weather, had dawned. Yet most people rejected Him. For Him they had only a cross.

That time of grace has lasted until today. How do we react? Have we recognised that it is high time to put things right with God? At present everyone can confess his guilt and believe in Jesus Christ as his Redeemer. Tomorrow does not belong to us; so procrastination might be perilous.

Today's reading: Exodus 36:1-13 · Luke 16:14-18
