The assurance of salvation

We have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.
Hebrews 3:14.

The assurance of salvation
Many believers begin to feel uneasy when they come across verses in the Bible that speak of Christians, but add the word "if", as is the case in today's verse above. They wonder, with some anxiety, whether they will steadfastly keep their confidence and faith right to the end.

Now it is important to consider this: we must distinguish between two different viewpoints. If we consider the matter from God's point of view, there is never an "if". When we came to God with a confession of our sins, believing in the Saviour, we were saved. We received new life, became children of God and were indwelt by the Holy Spirit. The foundation of all this was the perfect redemption achieved by the Lord Jesus at the cross and the perfect work that God brought about on this basis. All that God has done is absolutely secure.

Because we as human beings are responsible creatures there are also verses in the Bible that refer to our confession from man's standpoint. There we find the "if". There are people who maintain that they are converted and believers. But one sees nothing of it in their behaviour. Then doubts arise. The Lord knows who truly belongs to Him, while we cannot always determine the truth. But time will prove the authenticity. A sham Christian, whose confession is purely outward, will sooner or later give up and turn away from the faith. God, however, will bring every genuine believer to His purposed destination.

Today's reading: Jeremiah 1:1-19 · Luke 19:28-38

A Statement Of Purpose To Live By

Always give yourselves fully.' 1 Corinthians 15:58 NIV

Next time you pass a McDonald's, think about this statement from the one of the founders: Ray Kroc. Press on! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent....More
