“Why have you forsaken me?”

From the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? That is, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Matthew 27:45.46.

"Why have you forsaken me?"
We can contemplate these words of Jesus Christ on the cross only with great reverence. They are of great significance; but we cannot fathom their depth.

Since midday a sudden, total darkness had reigned over the whole land. Previously the Son of God had been scorned; but suddenly contempt and derision fell silent.

During those three hours God withdrew His Son from human sight, for something inconceivable occurred: God brought immense suffering upon Him. Why?

The Saviour of the world hung on the cross in sheer solitude abandoned by people, and now forsaken by God, because He wished to atone for the sins of all who believe on Him. Jesus had taken the place of the sinful in God's righteous judgment. God therefore turned away from Him and carried out the judgment on Him.

Without this means of atonement no-one could have been saved. But knowing the atoning death of Jesus benefits everyone who receives Him into his life by faith.

"He was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement for our peace was upon him, and by his stripes we are healed" (Isaiah 53:5).

He died that we might be forgiven,
He died to do us good,
That we might go at last to heaven,
Saved by His precious blood.

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
