Living water (1)

He (Jesus) left Judea and departed again to Galilee. But he needed to go through Samaria. So he came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from his journey, sat thus by the well.
John 4:3-6.

Living water (1)
The shortest route from Judea to Galilee goes through Samaria. The Jews avoided the Samaritans who lived there owing to their origin and unacceptable doctrines of faith. Some Jews therefore preferred taking a detour through the Jordan valley.

Jesus Christ, however, "needed to go through Samaria", urged by divine love, for there, near Sychar, was someone who needed Him. Jacob, the patriarch of the people of Israel, had once dwelt there. So the region and the spring or well were not without significance for religious tradition. The well was a good kilometre away from Sychar at the junction of two roads. It is about 35 metres deep and fed by ground water.

Feeling tired from His journey Jesus rested here. At the beginning of his gospel John had described the Lord from another angle: He is the eternal Word that was with God and was Himself God. The world was created by Him. He is the only begotten Son, who became Man.

Through Him we can know God the Father.

Here, however, we see the omnipotent Son of God wearied through a journey. Why did Jesus experience fatigue, hunger, thirst and distress? Because He wished to know the conditions under which we live, so that He can understand us and help us from personal experience. What condescension on the part of the Son of God!

(to be continued tomorrow)

Today's reading: Jeremiah 25:15-38 · Romans 2:8-16

Know When To Say Nothing

The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue.' Isaiah 50:4 NIV

Isaiah writes: The Sovereign Lord has given me a well-instructed tongue, to know the word that sustains the weary. He wakens me morning by morning, wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.'

Let's face it;...More
