Living water (4)

The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw. Jesus said to her, Go, call your husband and come here. The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said to her, You have well said, I have no husband, for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.
John 4:15-18.

Living water (4)
In the continuing conversation with the Son of God the Samaritan woman's trouble comes to light. She had been married five times. Her husbands were unlikely to have all died. She must also have been divorced, which often happens for trivial reasons. No details are given here; we can assume that the woman's longing for love and security had been disappointed repeatedly, and that the budding hope had always been suppressed.

Jesus did not go into her past. He did however point out that her present relationship was not legitimate. That made her guilty, and because the Lord wished to help her, He could not overlook this matter.

The Son of God had offered the Samaritan woman "living water" to truly quench her heart's thirst. That she would readily accept. But she first had to let divine light shine on her whole life. Her conscience had to be reached to release it from its burden. God can relieve us of the guilt of our life and forgive us only when we uncover it before Him. Therefore Jesus took this matter up, but not reproachfully or offensively, but without glossing over it.

MEAL OF REMEMBRANCE

The Holy Communion is a very significant meal. Unlike regular meals, it a meal of remembrance. When some people take this meal, they forget to heed the instruction in today's Bible reading where the Lord repeatedly said "this do in remembrance of Me". In other words, the meal reminds us of God's power of...More
