Thoughts on the Gospel of John (88)

Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said you are gods? If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, You are blaspheming, because I said, I am the Son of God? If I do not do the works of my Father, do not believe me, but if I do, though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in me, and I in him.
John 10:34-38.

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (88)
Jesus had just been accused of blasphemy by making Himself God. How did the Lord react? He reminded His opponents of "their law". Of course, He did not mean that He had nothing to do with the law, but that He wished to clarify the matter by means of the law that they proudly referred to, but too often failed to heed (ch. 7:19; 8:17).

When questions are raised concerning God, the beginning of the world and its future, or about mankind and morality, there is only one reliable guideline: Holy Scripture. Everything else is opinion or conjecture, which frequently change over the course of time.

The Lord quoted from Psalm 82, concluding that God had appointed certain persons in Israel as judges. They were designated as "gods", although they were mere receivers of the Word of God. Jesus, however, was Himself the Word become flesh (ch. 1:1.2.14). What a great difference this makes, and how unfounded was the reproach of blasphemy!

Whoever does not believe in Jesus should examine His works. They make the power and love of God the Father evident. Then it is clear that Jesus is Himself God and "in the Father".

(to be continued next Sunday)

OF KEYS AND DOORS

Every apartment or compartment with a lock has its key. It takes a key to open the gate of a house and several keys to enter the house its rooms. If you have fridge, car or wardrobe, you will equally have their keys. From the foregoing therefore, it is apparent that several good things with value have their...More
