September 29, 2015 Today's reading: 1 Corinthians 11:17-34 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. Matthew 7:13-14; John 8:12 The sheep of Panurge Rabelais, a French writer of the 16th century with a keen sense of observation of man's ways, told the famous story of Panurge, who, to take revenge on a dishonest sheep trader, embarked with him, bought one of his sheep and threw it overboard. The instinct of the other ship did the rest: the entire flock jumped into the sea. The Bible, the mirror of man's behaviour, often compares people with sheep. Not very flattering, you may think! However, let us recognise how we imitate our fellowmen in so many aspects of life. The fact that everyone acts in a certain way supports the idea that we are doing the right thing. That is, the right thing at that moment! Jesus Christ spoke of a wide gate and a broad way, in other words, satisfying all our desires. That one is in a big crowd who all think and act similarly - how reassuring, even if the end of the way is eternal condemnation! Jesus also spoke of a narrow way that only few took, but which led to life. Entering by the gate means being saved, taking the narrow way means walking with Jesus who is eternal life. Each of us on earth has a decisive choice to make. Have we already decided? If not, are we prepared to do so now? |

However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More |

The Good Seed for Friday, February 25, 2017 by GBV Dillenburg GmbH Adam found an excuse: Jeremiah 17:9 In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More |
