Joy is something everyone...

The fruit of the Spirit is joy.
Galatians 5:22.

Joy is something everyone needs and seeks. Many are of the opinion that their joy consists largely in pleasures and distractions of any kind. But they do not provide permanent satisfaction; they finally lead to disillusion and sadness.

Other people seek their enjoyment in all that is beautiful and sublime in God's creation and the creative arts. But that is all transient and will offer no comfort or help when they stand on the threshold of eternity.

Genuine joy that is not dependent on external circumstances but stands above them and therefore proves its value can come from God alone. It is brought about by His Spirit that dwells in every true believer in Christ. Such joy enabled the apostle Paul to find consolation in prison and from there even to comfort and gladden the hearts of others.

What a moment it is when someone finds faith in Jesus Christ and experiences the joy of salvation for the first time! It is joy that fills the soul every day. A Christian needs only to think of the great salvation granted him through Jesus Christ and to thank Him for it.

The Spirit of God also shows the believer what happiness comes through "fellowship with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ". Then his joy is "full" (1 John 1:3.4). The joy of fellowship also binds God's children together, stimulating them and testifying that they have new life.

"Rejoice in the Lord always" (Philippians 4:4).

Today's reading: Lamentations 3:1-24 · Psalms 44:9-17

(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
