Christ the Lord and Master

False teachers, denying the Lord who bought them, bring on themselves swift destruction.
2 Peter 2:1.

Christ the Lord and Master
The Greek word for "Lord" in the above verse ("despotes") is not the noun used in the title "Lord Jesus Christ"; it signifies supreme authority and rights through ownership, such as a slave owner had. In other scriptures this noun is translated as "master" (cf. 1 Peter 2:18). Today's verse deals with the rights over the whole world and all mankind that the Lord Jesus obtained through His death on the cross: He "bought" them.

The Greek verb for "buy" here is also different in meaning from "redeem". It simply means "paid the price", whereas "redeem" includes the sense of releasing from a former condition after the payment of ransom money (cf. Mark 10:45). Christ did indeed "give himself a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2:6). Everyone can be saved through His self-sacrifice, but only those who accept Him as their Saviour will actually be redeemed.

Through His death on the cross Christ "purchased" the entire world and every individual with it.

Every single person has the choice whether he accepts Christ personally as his Redeemer or not. No-one, however, can decide against Christ being his Lord and Master, for Jesus purchased this right through His death, and will at a future date enforce it. The day will come when all must bow before Jesus Christ and acknowledge that He is Lord.

Those who reject the Son of God as the Redeemer must fear that day, for none will be able to pass Him by as the Lord and Master and Judge of all mankind.

This applies particularly to those who lead people astray with false, unscriptural teaching. Whoever knows Christ as the Redeemer looks forward to that day, for He who paid such a high price for our redemption will then receive the honour due to Him.

Today's reading: Leviticus 8:22-36 · Psalms 55:9-16

Two discouraged disciples were reasoning among themselves...

Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory? And having begun from Moses and from all the prophets, He interpreted them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.
(Luke 24:26-27)

SPIRITUAL WARFARE I

When we are told to put on the whole armour of God, one thing becomes clear instantly. This is the fact that there is a God. We cannot be talking of the armour of God if there is no God. Anyone who thinks that there is no God is a fool (Psalm 14:1). You have to pray that God would reveal Himself to you. The...More
