This question is as topical today as...

What then shall I do with Jesus?
Matthew 27:22.

This question is as topical today as when the Roman governor Pilate asked it. He answered it in his own way and had Jesus Christ crucified without any justifiable accusation.

Later Pilate must surely have remembered that night. Hadn't he heard again and again that this Jesus of Nazareth had done only good, healing people on His journeys through the land? Didn't he notice that the religious leaders of the nation, the high priests and scribes, were accusing Jesus through sheer envy? And while Pilate was dealing with this case, he received a warning from, his wife: "Have nothing to do with that just man" (v. 19).

Pilate had been well informed, as is right for a governor and judge. Moreover he had not been able to establish any guilt in Him. Nevertheless he sentenced the innocent One! It was a dreadful injustice that he had had the Lord Jesus scourged. Then he had tried to set Him free, as was his custom at the Passover feast. He had probably not reckoned with the people's demand to release the murderer Barabbas.

"What then shall I do with Jesus?" With this question he passed the responsibility over to the people, so as to wash his hands over the matter and exclaim, "I am innocent of the blood of this just person. You see to it" (v. 24).

Pilate yielded to the demands of the mob and decided against Jesus. But what about you? Decide for the Son of God and give Him the place in your life that is His due!

Today's reading: Leviticus 11:1-28 · Psalms 56:8-13

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
