He had stood on the threshold of...

The LORD is longsuffering and abundant in mercy, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he by no means clears the guilty.
Numbers 14:18.

He had stood on the threshold of death several times. Once he had been on mountain tour in the Alps, when a thin layer of ice broke and he almost drowned in a glacier lake. Another time his yacht capsized in a storm. Thanks to the lifeboat service he was saved.

In his mid-forties leukaemia was diagnosed, but thanks to excellent medical care the disease came to a standstill. God granted him fifteen further years, until he was struck by a falling tree in a hurricane, while he was driving his car.

Why should I tell you this? It is because that man, though he was kind and friendly to everyone, had Christian believers as neighbours, one of whom regularly spoke to Him about faith in Jesus Christ. Although he had a good knowledge of the Bible, he did not see why he needed a Saviour to get things right with God.

God wanted to save that man. He warned him earnestly time and again. But that stormy day put an end to his life on earth. From one minute to the next he was called into eternity to answer before God, His Creator.

"Behold, God works all these things twice, in fact, three times with a man, to bring back his soul from the pit, that he may be enlightened with the light of life" (Job 33:29.30).

"Do you despise the riches of his goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?" (Romans 2:4).

Today's reading: Leviticus 23:23-44 · Psalms 69:1-12

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

REWARD FOR LABOUR

Jacob sojourned with Laban and laboured for him for several years. At first, his host was cheating him at every opportunity, and the years of his hard labour were almost in vain. Down the line, God had to intervene to enable Jacob eat the fruit of his labour. For a reader of this devotional, in every area that you...More

HOW PROPHETIC ARE YOUR NAMES?

The name you bear is very important because it serves as your identity and your future may be connected to it. The name a person bears is sometimes indicative of the experiences he or she will encounter in life. Take for instance Moses: this name means "drawn out of water"

Bible in one year:
