With the work of redemption accomplished...

Truly this was the Son of God.
Matthew 27:54.

With the work of redemption accomplished, the prophecies of the Old Testament fulfilled and the victory obtained, the Lord could exclaim, in yielding His life over to death; "It is finished!" (John 19:30). God confirmed this cry of His beloved Son by giving mankind clear and varied proofs both of that victory and of the honour He accorded His Son as a consequence.

First, God tore down the veil of the temple "from top to bottom" (Matthew 27:51), thus showing that "the way into the holiest of all" had now been opened up by the Lord Jesus through His shed blood (cf. Hebrews 9:7-12).

Then God opened the graves of saints, and it became clear that the Lord Jesus had vanquished death through His work of redemption (Matthew 27:51-53).

God also watched over the honour of His Son. As Isaiah had prophesied, the Lord's body was not buried with the wicked, but laid in a dignified manner in the tomb of a rich man Isaiah 53:9; Mark 16:43-46).

From the start to the end of the Lord Jesus' life on earth we see the bitter hatred of men towards Him. It did not even end with His death, for the leaders of the people had His grave carefully sealed and guarded. These precautions proved to be vain: indeed the fact of the resurrection was all the more evident and indisputable through these measures.

We are struck by His enemies' remark that Jesus had stated that He would rise again after three days (v. 63), whereas His disciples had forgotten it.

Today's reading: Leviticus 24:1-23 · Psalms 69:13-28

CONDESCEND!

After seeing their plight, hearing their cries and feeling their pains, God came down to rescue the Israelites from Egypt. Our God is a mobile God. He comes down to deliver His own. As high as God is and even though He has His throne in Heaven, yet He condescends to meet the needs of His children on earth (Isaiah...More

EX-CHAMPION?

Although it is an unpleasant experience to be a defeated contender, becoming an ex-champion is a much more grievous experience. When you are not yet a champion, only a few people pay attention to you. But by the time you become a champion, you will be on the radar of many people, including your enemies. A champion has...More
