In debt, but acquitted

If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 10:9.

In debt, but acquitted
A wealthy British landowner once had posted all over his estate a notice signed with his own hand. It proclaimed: "Lord Crowe will be in his office on the first day of the month of March from 9 o'clock to midday to settle the debts of those who owe him money and who have not the means to pay." This announcement surprised many. They crowded round the poster, discussed it, doubted and mocked.

On the appointed day at the time arranged Lord Crowe settled himself in his office. Everyone had come to his residence, but no-one dared to enter for fear of being ridiculed. One couple did decide to go in. The lord and his estate manager received them kindly. They were given a receipt for all their debts, then were taken to a neighbouring room with instructions not to leave before midday.

Outside people waited. It was only when the couple emerged, with their receipt in their hand that everyone wanted to enter in turn. But it was midday, and too late!

This incident may make us smile, but it depicts the way in which many respond to God's offer of salvation. To benefit from it faith in Jesus Christ is sufficient.Every one of us has a debt of guilt towards God on account of his sinful state. God offers everyone His forgiveness. But His offer must be accepted individually.

"If you do not believe, you will die in your sins" (John 8:24).

Today's reading: Joshua 1:1-18 · 1 Corinthians 1:1-9

Today God is calling you (3)

I have prayed for you, that your faith will not fail.' Luke 22:32 NASB

God wants you to do His will, but you'll never reach the place of spiritual maturity in which you're free of Satan. You can overcome him, but you can't eliminate him. Look at Peter. He had only one gear: overdrive. He was always...More
