The secret of true discipleship in...

Jesus said to those Jews who believed him, If you abide in my word, you are my disciples indeed.

Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing causes them to stumble.

John 8:31; Psalm 119:165.

The secret of true discipleship in our everyday life can be found in these verses. We may know this very well, yet it is important to remind ourselves of the fact and to pass it on to the next generation.

The best way to study the Bible is simply to read it attentively every day and prayerfully expose ourselves to the divine light that it sheds. It reveals much food for thought. Moreover, the Holy Spirit works in our heart to form our thinking increasingly according to Holy Scripture. If we wish to understand God's Word, so as to live accordingly, it influences our soul to its depths. And the character of God and the Lord Jesus becomes more evident in our heart and life.

There is nothing particularly complicated or conspicuous in discipleship. On the contrary, all is astonishingly simple, and it works. If we read the Bible continually with this attitude, we become better acquainted with it and then understand its message and coherence and come into the blessing of its influence.

Whoever is young in the faith is sometimes amazed at the scriptural knowledge of older Christians. But this is a natural consequence of applying the simple means of reading God's book daily and impressing its details on our memory..

Today's reading: Joshua 8:14-23 · 1 Corinthians 7:1-11

(1 Corinthians 15:29)

Who are "the dead," and who are those "baptized for the dead"? The next verse gives an important hint: "Why do we also endanger ourselves every...More
