No life without light! Everyone understands...

That was the true light which gives light to every man coming into the world.
John 1:9.

No life without light! Everyone understands what light and darkness are from experience. We also know that these terms have far more meaning in their figurative sense. This is especially true of their use in John's gospel.

Today's verse from the Bible speaks of the One who finally brought light into our confused world. Indeed, He was Himself that light. It is understandable that the people of the time wondered just who this Person was - and He was standing in their midst!

In the first verses of his gospel John had already mentioned some details about the Son of God: He was Himself God and had been with the Father from eternity. The whole world was made by Him (vv. 1-3).

Through the incarnation and the perfect life of Jesus on earth every single person is placed in the light, for in Him we learn who God is and what man is and how he should live. The decisive question for us is: what do we do with this light? Do we acknowledge what it shows us to be true, or do we simply close our eyes and remain in darkness?

Many people have opened their lives to let Jesus come in with His light. The result was that they realised that their own past, the present and the future needed judging differently from what they had thought; so they started living a totally new life: ""As many as received him, to them he gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in his name" (John 1:12).

Today's reading: Joshua 9:1-16 · 1 Corinthians 7:25-40

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted. Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.
(Galatians 6:1-2)
