By grace is generally meant a...

May the God of all grace, who called us to his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, perfect, establish, strengthen and settle you.
1 Peter 5:10.

By grace is generally meant a favour to which one has no claim. Good deeds that people do for each other rarely have this character: they are based more on reciprocation.

When God shows someone a favour, there is no question of reciprocation: it is always pure grace. Guilty man could otherwise never enter a relationship with God. It arises from undeserved grace, the grace that God wishes to bestow on us through His Son Jesus Christ.

In this matter everyone, however exemplary his life might have been, is on the same level before God: "All have sinned" (Romans 3:23). That sufficed to make God's care and kindness unattainable once for all.

Yet God was willing to show grace. However, this was only possible, if the matter of sin was settled righteously. Therefore Jesus Christ came to earth as a Man. Because He atoned for sin by His sacrifice on the cross, God can now pardon every sinner who turns to Him. Christ has accomplished all that was necessary. Whoever acknowledges his guilt and is converted to God can receive this gift, the forgiveness of sins through faith, and thank God for it.

The redeemed then have a deep desire to lead their life with Christ to the honour of God. But that will not succeed through their own strength. For that, too, they are dependent on God's grace. God is "the God of all grace". He grants His children the help and strength that they need. They will safely reach their goal, eternal glory.

Today's reading: Joshua 10:12-27 · 1 Corinthians 9:1-15

DIVINE CHAMPION 2

Yesterday we discovered that our Lord Jesus Christ is the number one champion and that He makes His people champions. We also saw that a divine champion is a person raised up and supported by God.

One attribute of a champion is strength. The divine champion is one who receives divine strengthening....More
