Simon Peter meets Jesus

Andreas...first found his own brother Simon, and said to him, We have found the Messiah, (which is translated, the Christ). And he brought him to Jesus. Now when Jesus looked at him, he said, You are Simon , the son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas, (which is translated, a stone).
John 1:40-43.

Simon Peter meets Jesus
Andrew, the fisherman from the Lake of Genessaret, was listening to John the Baptist's preaching. He recognised that Jesus of Nazareth was the promised Messiah, the Redeemer. He felt compelled to pass on this overwhelming news to his brother Simon first of all.

When someone comes to know Jesus Christ personally, he wants to share what he has experienced, as Andrew did here. We know little else about him, but he did lead his brother to Jesus Christ. And Simon is none other than the apostle Peter, who years later would preach to thousands, of whom 3,000 souls were saved on one day (cf. Acts 2:41). And these people propagated the news even further - as has happened right up to our own day!

Simon was brought to the Lord Jesus by his own brother Andrew, and that altered his life! Jesus looked at him, as only the Son of God could see and assess people. Then He gave him a new name: Cephas, the Aramaic form of Peter. The deeper meaning of that name Peter was to discover later (cf. Matthew 16:18; 12 Peter 2:4).

Simon Peter believed in God and expected the promised Messiah. So he joined John the Baptist, the forerunner of the Messiah, as his follower. Now Peter met the Redeemer Himself, and was given a new name - a sign that he was saved, "a new creation" (Luke 10:20; 2 Corinthians 5:17).

Today's reading: Joshua 13:1-14 · 1 Corinthians 11:1-19

. He learned that God can only use subjection of Himself, weakness in self, and dependence upon Him only.
However, there was only one person, spiritually speaking, who was a true Nazarite, and that was our Lord Jesus. He shows us that it is not a negative thing to be separated from the world but rather a...More

Adam found an excuse:

Jeremiah 17:9

In a discussion on the above text with some young people, the question was asked: how are we to understand the word "deceitful" here? After some consideration they reached this conclusion: deceitful means that the heart finds an excuse for everything. This seems a very apt...More
