Perilous neglect

You search the scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of me.
John 5:39.

Perilous neglect
"Which work of classical literature are you ashamed never to have read?" - "The Bible."

That radio and television quiz master admitted to having slept little and thereby to have profited from reading a lot: "At least two books a day." His library contained 3,000 books of all kinds classified according to their authors: novels, philosophy, drama. One classic appears to have escaped his literary hunger: the Bible.

By reading we seek to increase our learning and to get some distraction. But the text of the Bible is living. It is God's Word, which has the power to bring us into a relationship with God and to transform our life. It reveals what God is: love and light. It is like a seed germinating in the heart of those who receive it: they are "born again through the word of God which lives and abides for ever" (1 Peter 1:23).

Believing its message means believing God. His aim is to grant us divine life. The Bible is more than a distraction, it leads to the discovery of true joy. In contrast to all that men can write, "the words of the LORD are pure words" (Psalm 12:6). Nothing in the Bible is superfluous, all is useful. It tells us the truth about ourselves and about God. "Your word is truth" (John 17:17). If you have a Bible, open it and read it!

Today's reading: Joshua 23:14-24:5 · 1 Corinthians 15:51-58

(Titus 1:2-3)

THE NON-LYING GOD (2)
I can lie. Titus could too, and so could the Cretans. But God can not lie. I can deceive. But...More

When You Have A Vision

I was not disobedient to the vision.' Acts 26:19 NIV

When God gives you a vision for your life, you need to know how to:

(1) Hold it. Your vision is governed by a time frame: If it seems slow in coming, wait patiently, for it will surely take place.' (Habakkuk 2:3 NLT) Some of us can...More

Thoughts on the Gospel of John (113)

He who loves his life will lose it, and he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, let him follow me; and where I am, there my servant will be also. If anyone serves me, him my Father will honour.
John 12:25.26.
