God will forgive you

Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over the transgression?
Micah 7:18.

God will forgive you
At Pranles in the Ardèche in France Marie Durand's home houses a small museum retracing the life of that Christian woman imprisoned for her faith during the reign of Louis XIV. When workman renewed the roof, they discovered a slate with the words "God will forgive you."

Who had engraved that, and who was it intended for? We do not know, but in the time of religious persecution the person who wrote those words was certainly thinking of those who hunted down protestant Christians. He followed the example of the Lord Jesus, who, speaking of His executioners on the cross, asked His Father: "Forgive them, for they do not know what they do" (Luke 23:34).

He had not written "God forgives", but "God will forgive you." This "you", in the singular, addresses everyone, especially all who have not put things in order with God.

God is love, and is prepared to forgive the sins of everyone. However, it is necessary to acknowledge that one is a sinner and accept His grace. It is granted to whoever requests it, but it is not forced on those who refuse it.

It is still the age of grace, when God is patient. Soon the door will be shut (cf. Matthew 25:11). Then it will be too late to respond to God's love. Having read his leaf, you are responsible before God. If you have not responded to His offer of forgiveness, you will be judged by Jesus, whom you have rejected. What must one do?

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31).

Today's reading: Judges 1:27-2:5 · 2 Corinthians 1:15-24
