“Unbearable!”

Even in laughter the heart may sorrow, and the end of mirth may be grief.
Proverbs 14:13.

"Unbearable!"
Dalida was a famous pop-song singer and actress. Her career was a gigantic success; nevertheless she took her life at the age of 54. As her farewell letter she had written a very brief note: "Life is unbearable for me - forgive me!"

That is just one of many examples showing that success, fame and wealth alone cannot make life worth living. Pleasures and joys that are purely external come to an end, and with them superficial friendships. That was Dalida's painful experience.

This shows why the words from the book of Proverbs quoted above draw attention to our heart. Mankind cannot be truly and permanently happy without God. Our joy depends on the relationship we have with God. If I do not really know Him and am unaware that He loves me, my heart will remain empty and sad, even if I am well to all appearance. I might pursue happiness, but it will be "vanity and a grasping for the wind", as King Solomon said so aptly.

If, on the other hand, I have come to know Christ, first as my Saviour, then as a constant friend, a radical change takes place. My life has found a foundation and an objective. I know that God loves me and experience joy that no-one can take away.

In communion with Him life becomes not only bearable, but enriched!

Today's reading: Judges 6:1-13 · 2 Corinthians 5:10-21

FASTING IS NECESSARY

Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS?

Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More
