Nothing hidden
None of us could bear the entire neighbourhood knowing what we do, say, or think in the course of a single day. How shameful it would be if our worst secrets were revealed and propagated in broad daylight! Nevertheless, all that happens within us, absolutely everything, and whatever we express or do is known by God. His appraisal should worry us more than that of those near and like us. One day we shall have to account for all the details of the existence He has granted us.

God's perfect knowledge had filled the writer of Psalm 139 with concern: "Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence?" (v. 7).

Such anxiety can, however, change to incomparable joy. That is the case when, once conscious that one is a sinner, it is recognised and confessed sincerely before God. We then agree with Him and take the place that befits us: that of a guilty person. God can then reveal Himself as the God of all grace and forgiveness, a Saviour God.

A believer can then say, "How precious also are your thoughts to me, o God. Search me and know my heart; try me and know my anxieties; and lead me in the way everlasting" (Psalm 139:7.23.24).

From there he can go forward on the way of life, step by step with God's help.
