Today's reading: Numbers 6

But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.
Genesis 4:5

He had made such an effort! "By the sweat of his brow" he had produced fruit from the earth and offered it to God. Nevertheless, God was not satisfied with him. What displeased Cain even more: God accepted the offering of his brother Abel, although he had done no more than slaughter an animal. What made that better?
It's an old story, yet it happens daily, even with the most upright people. One leads a blameless life, doing good. Surely God must acknowledge that! One can indeed get annoyed over those who maintain that it is necessary to confess one's sins before God and believe that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for sins; otherwise one cannot get to heaven.
That was precisely the difference between Cain and his brother Abel. The latter believed in the effect of a sacrifice that had been slain, for "by faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain" (Hebrews 11:4).
Cain could not look God in the face. He looked down: his conscience was nagging him. Despite his efforts to please God, in his heart, he could not find peace - an exact reflection of what so many experience today.
What is the answer? Cain tried to solve the matter by murdering his brother. That "pious" person was not out of the way! But it gave Cain no peace. Why didn't he listen to his conscience and confess his guilt to God so as to obtain forgiveness? Then he could have looked up to God in gratitude. Instead, he did the worst possible thing: he "went out from the presence of the LORD" (v.16). Forever.
That was the tragic end of religious man: he had relied on doing what he could!

FASTING IS NECESSARY

To relate with the Holy Spirit, you must be holy. You must also exercise a living faith, pray and fast. Some people will tell you that because had finished the work of salvation, there is no need to fast. To them, fasting is completely needless and is some form of self-inflicted punishment. But they forget that...More

ATTENTIVE TO THE MASTER'S INSTRUCTIONS?

It is always good to pay close attention to instructions given by someone you claim to be your guide or guardian. Often, we miss many opportunities, breakthroughs and victories because we fail to see the details of the instructions given to us on a subject. A multinational company once held a promotional exam for...More
